Casas sim, assim não! [Houses, yes. But not like this!]

On going

About

Abstract: On 25 April 1974, Portugal had one of the highest illiteracy rates in Europe and only the bourgeoisie had access to further education. Around 25% of the population lived in overcrowded and/or rundown housing, especially in urban centres. Solving the problems of education and housing has become a priority, particularly through occupations, the creation of cooperatives and participatory projects. Fifty years on, the "housing crisis" is back on the agenda and, despite the various advances in schooling, the promotion of critical thinking remains a key requirement, particularly given the contemporary challenges of disinformation, media manipulation and the rise of right-wing populism.

The project “Casas sim, assim não” (Houses, yes. But not like this” reflects on the right to housing in the light of past and present struggles, promoting critical thinking through artistic practice and community dialogue.

Divided into four areas – creation, programming, mediation and publication – the project takes place over the course of a year. The activities (artist residency, exhibition, concert, workshop, fanzine, cinema and debate) will take place in four bookshops and the surrounding public space in the heart of downtown Porto.
