About
Abstract: This project aims to create a contemporary sociological portrait of the Diocese of Vila Real, which celebrate its centenary in 2022.
The project has three specific objectives. The first concerns the identification and analysis of the characteristics of the Catholic Church, which, due to its position of dominance, are still present today and are validated at a cultural and religious level by Catholic memories, identities and practices that contribute to Portugal appearing as one of the European countries least susceptible to secularisation. The second objective refers to the transformations underway, articulating the range of challenges facing Portuguese Catholicism today, specifically this diocese and the way in which the Catholic Church in this territory has reacted to secularisation and pluralisation, even if small, of the religious. Finally, it is hoped that the study of this diocese will open up opportunities for reflection and discussion on Catholicism in the north of the country, in its various nuances and complexities.
Final beneficiaries/target population: Vila Realense population; actors in the Catholic field (both at the institutional level and for believers in general).
