About

The “QUE CLASSE” project prioritises the intersection between disciplines and the collaborative participation of several artistic actors, in order to carry out a sociological research work to analyse the prevailing social inequalities among profissional visual artists in Portugal. The aim is to collect data in order to assess the real extent of a phenomenon that, empirically and by common sense, the artistic world tends to acknowledge: the social fabric of the visual arts is marked by significant inequalities, and a large proportion of creators with institutional representation come from privileged backgrounds. The study will take an intersectional approach to social inequalities among artists, exploring the links between social class and dimensions such as gender and racial/ethnic belonging, and the impact of these identities on the lives and success of those pursuing careers in the visual arts.

Target population: artistic class in general and, in particular, those who develop their activities in the field of visual arts; arts patrons and policy makers.
