About
Abstract: The project “Pathways of Citizenship –Solidarity Literacy and Literacies” is an initiative conducted by APEFA – Pathways of Citizenship –Solidarity Literacy and Literacies / Learning, which is part of the literacy and promotion of adult literacy. Carried out in various contexts in the northern region of Portugal, it aims to fight against literal, regressive and functional illiteracy among the adult population, contribute to an informed and active citizenship, promoting social inclusion, fostering socioeconomic and territorial enhancement, and raising awareness to the importance of lifelong education and learning. It involves a collective effort of socio-educational intervention, a wide range of relevant actors and institutions in the contexts where it takes place.
This is a ‘pilot’ project that aims to consolidate itself as an example of an approach to be replicated, mutatis mutandis, in various places across the country. It is based on the principle of co-responsibility, interinstitutional cooperation and networking, which translates into a dynamic organisation and operationalisation of actions in a co-promotion arrangement, actively involving public and private institutions and of members of the communities involved.
Recently, the project’s logic and work methodology were recognised by the “Healthy neighbourhoods” Programme, which approved an application for funding the extension and qualification of the activities in one of the contexts where the initiative is carried out (“Citizenship Paths” in Paranhos, Porto).
The engagement of participants is carried out in workshop sessions by “Groups of Facilitators / Adult Educators”. Alongside with these workshops, the implementation of the project and its outcomes are monitored and assessed by a team of researchers from inED – Centre for Research and Innovation in Education of the Porto Polytechnic School of Education, which includes João Queirós, a professor at that school and researcher at IS-UP. In articulation with this assessment, the team seeks to reconstitute and analyse social, educational and professional paths, as well as the educational experiences of adults involved in literacy programmes and in the promotion of basic literacy skills such as those promoted by APEFA.
