SYNOPSIS

State, Poverty and Punishment corresponds to a sociological reflection on the intervention of the State in the region of social space marked by the strong weight of domination, seeking to objectify punitive aspects of that action. The purpose of the analysis presented here reflects the choice of intersecting two lines of reflection: one guided by sociological theoretical production linked to analytical frameworks and observations leading to an understanding of that state intervention, and the other by the analytical contribution of the French social scientist Loïc Wacquant, with the production of stable sociological knowledge about this scientific problem. These reflective axes correspond primarily to two somewhat denser lines within a grid of many other intersecting lines of problems and authors.

Based on the multiple theoretical-empirical coordinates presented and reviewed relationally, a study was conducted to monitor the activities within the criminal jurisdiction of the Northern Regional Delegation of the Directorate-General for Social Reintegration, which gave rise to the Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services. The exploration of this institution allowed for the objectification of contradictory dynamics in social reintegration policies and the growth in the application of non-custodial sentences and measures whose execution is ensured by the institution. This aimed to discern the contribution of this case from the bureaucratic field to the conceptual and empirical specification of the Wacquant model, within the context of Portuguese socio-political evolution.
