About
Asbtract: The project aims to situate the debate on the organisation of working time, in particular the reduction of the working week, which has been adopted by several developed countries. Among other things, the strategy focuses on improving the performance and productivity of employees and promoting their well-being. At the same time, interest in the reduction of working time is emerging as a possible response to several contemporary challenges, namely growing wage inequalities, the rapid development of automation, stagnating productivity, the culture of long working hours and environmental problems.
Taking into account the international discussion on the four-day working week and the pilot project on the same subject that has been running in the private sector in Portugal since the beginning of 2023, this project aims to: (i) collect and analyse a range of national and international statistics on working time, working conditions, and well-being; (ii) discuss the statistical data from ongoing European pilot projects on the four-day working week; (iii) draw up case studies of organisations that have this management practice in place.
In November 2003, the project team signed a cooperation agreement with the “Pilot Project for the Implementation of the Four-Day Week in Portugal”, represented by Pedro Gomes and Rita Fontinha, to promote technical and scientific collaboration between the two teams.
