Displacements - Place, Memory and Social Identity in the City of Porto (DLMIS_PRT)

About

Abstract: “Deslocações” [Displacements] is a social research and community intervention initiative that aims to (re)create a community of memory for the residents of the Aleixo neighbourhood in Porto, who were evicted and displaced to other social housing neighbourhoods following the demolition of this residential context between 2011 and 2019. Developed in a form close to that of oral history, and structured around the collection of life narratives from former residents of the neighbourhood, many of whom also played a role as members and leaders of the local association, the project aims to (re)build a space for sharing and dialogue around the trajectories and experiences of residential and social mobility, characterised by significant changes in living conditions – in many cases forced and repeated changes (from Ribeira-Barredo to Aleixo, from Aleixo to another neighbourhood), and not infrequently signifying processes of political and social relegation.

Final beneficiaries/target population: Former residents of the Aleixo neighbourhood (Porto); APSPBA members and leaders; Other residents of municipal housing neighbourhoods in the city of Porto.
