On 6 November 2024, at 11:30 am, in the context of General Sociology I, Prof. Manuela Mendes will reflect on the coexistence of diversity(ies), especially ethnic, cultural and racial diversity, in a global social context marked by events such as the economic and financial crisis of 2008, the pandemic associated with SARS-CoV-2 and, more recently, the Russian-Ukrainian and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, etc. the economic and financial crisis of 2008, the pandemic associated with SARS-CoV-2 and, more recently, the Russian-Ukrainian and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, etc. which have accentuated and reinforced processes of growing acceptance and normalisation of radicalisation and extremism in consolidated democracies. It will also seek to understand, among other phenomena, the different faces and expressions of racism(s), namely attitudes and behaviours of hostility and rejection towards the Other (e.g. people of African descent and Gypsies in Portugal, among others), as well as the resurgence of rhetoric and narratives based on the essentialisation, demonisation and, above all, dehumanisation of the Other, which put the effective fulfilment of social rights to the test. Admission is free and everyone is invited.
