About

Abstract: The project claims the right to the city for young people through their LIVED ART(S), which capture their PORT(S). By using various artistic fragments — such as soundscapes, photographs, paintings, and collages — the project encourages the creation of personal portraits by these young people, revealing multiple cities and their many facets. The project’s relevance lies in the urgent need to give voice to youth in order to challenge the marginalisation of their experiences in the hegemonic city.

Methodologically, the project is grounded in the drift of the self, allowing young people to identify their cities without the constraints of dominant urban narratives. This artistic mosaic is based on the empowerment of the ports of ten YOUNG-CITIZEN-ARTISTS — aged between 18 and 30 — living on the margins and representing diverse social, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. They will reveal their artistic [RE]EXISTENCES under the guidance/facilitation of CITIZEN-ARTISTS.

The selection of the youth group will follow criteria of social, cultural, ethnic-racial, and residential diversity — with the project’s grassroots partners playing a crucial role in their identification. Subsequently, through a strategy of creative co-mentorship involving a group of CITIZEN-ARTISTS, self-defined ecologies will be organised, leading to the emergence of ACTIONS, EVENTS, WORDS, and ARTISTIC OBJECTS.

These expressions will empower the youths’ sensitive potential, enabling them to see themselves as integral parts — that matter — of Porto’s urban landscape.

The project’s originality lies in its expansion and diversification of the artistic proposal of the SOU DO PORTO E TRAGO UM PORTO EM MIM (I AM FROM PORTO AND I CARRY A PORTO WITHIN ME) drift project — part of the Manobras do Porto programme — carried out by Paula Guerra in 2012, which gave visibility to the everyday representations/experiences of young residents of Porto’s Sé neighbourhood, with a focus on the right to the city.

Final beneficiaries/target population: Disadvantaged communities, Associations and the third sector, Young people (18-30) residents, Adults (19-64) residents.
