Technology in the face of global challenges | Midterm Conference

Registrations are now open for the European Sociological Association midterm conference “Technology in the face of global challenges”, organized by RN24/SSTNET – Sociology of Science and Technology Network.

In a context marked by rapid technological advances and mounting global crises, Europe – and the European Union in particular – must navigate a constantly evolving sociotechnical landscape. Climate change, economic inequality, geopolitical instability, and digital transformation are profoundly reshaping institutions and societies.

Rather than treating technology merely as a solution or a disruptive force, the conference will explore how technological practices, imaginaries, and infrastructures are embedded in, and are constitutive of, wider sociopolitical dynamics. Through this sociological lens, we aim to foster critical reflection on issues of governance, ethics, security, and justice as integral to the complex processes through which technologies emerge and operate.

The conference will be held at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, during the 26th and 27th of November of 2025. Registration is mandatory, but participation is free of charge.
