The activities of the Institute of Sociology have privileged, since the creation of the Unit, the establishment of networks and partnerships involving not only scientific institutions, but also a wide range of public and private entities.

The Inequality Observatory is an independent structure, set up by the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES), at the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL). CIES is in charge of the scientific coordination and the on-going operation of the Inequality Observatory, having as initial partners the Institute of Sociology, at the University of Porto (IS-UP), and the Centre for Social Studies, at the University of Azores (CES-UA).

This group gathers researchers who study religion and religions in the context of multiple modernities (chronologically and geographically) aiming to contribute to bring together those who share this research problematic in a multidisciplinary approach, facilitating the creation of contexts of circulation, exchange and network cooperation.

To be a leader in the Portuguese market in interventions focused on the human factor or systems boosted by this market, to promote  a better life and expand it abroad, mainly to Portuguese-speaking countries. To help create or shape values, attitudes and behaviours, towards a sustainable social, environmental and economic environment.

In a contemporary social context marked by risk and ambivalence between labour precariousness and quality of life at work, in which societies continue to reshape the structure and social culture of work, it is relevant to form a specialised “social space” to monitor, reflect on and discuss the general changes in working conditions.

Dissemination and discussion of multidisciplinary research on the problematic of Industrial Heritage. The seminar brings together researchers from different Portuguese universities who work on this topic. This decentralised seminar also involves international researchers who bring their experiences and research findings to the sessions.

The Social Barometer platform is essentially sociological in nature, but does not exclude any scientific area, and is made up of a group of individuals who are interested and willing to reflect on and discuss in full aspects of Portuguese society and its specific organisational, functional and relational features.

The Social Observatory of Vila Nova de Gaia was created in 2019 and results from a collaboration with the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto. The Social Observatory aims at deepening, in a scientifically autonomous and independent way, the knowledge about the demographic, economic and socio-cultural fabric of the municipality, in order to inform municipal intervention and public policies.
