PhD project: Transglobal Indie: the configuration of the indie rock scenes of Porto and Fortaleza through the streets of the cities (1980-2020)

Supervisor: Paula Guerra (IS-UP)
Timeline: 2018-2022

Abstract: The research deals with the relationship between musicians who call themselves “independents” and the public power of their cities, that is, it explores the relation between artists and the State, or between the cultural field and the field of power. The question it aims to answer is: what does “independence” mean for musicians who consider themselves independent, even though they perform with the support of their city council? If they consider themselves ‘independent’ working on those terms, then what is the definition of independence? Why is it so important to call oneself independent and how is this category a badge of prestige, that is, a sign of social distinction?

End beneficiaries/target population: Independent musicians, public policy managers addressing cultural issues and the civil society consumer of cultura.
