Abstract: In northern Portugal, waste from coal, Sb-Au, Au-As, and W mining operations deposited in tailings ponds is a source of soil and water pollution. The RESTAURA project: Revitalizing the Land: Soil Health Assessment, Risk Analysis, and Rehabilitation of Former Mining Areas aims to assess environmental pollution in these areas, contributing to the development of strategies for mitigation and restoration of the health of these resources. At the same time, the sociological impact of mining on local communities will be analyzed, and artist residencies will be promoted to foster new forms of interaction between science, territory, and human relations.
End beneficiaries/Target population: Communities from former mining areas, with a special focus on São Pedro da Cova, Midões, Banjas, Tapada, Corgo and Rio de Frades.
Scientific Area(s): Geology, Chemistry and Geochemistry, Geophysics, Sociology, and Arts.
